Canadian automobile tools retailer Magna International Inc. will partner with Michigan startup May Mobility on self-driving shuttles, a companies pronounced on Wednesday.
Magna will outfit low-speed electric shuttles versed with May Mobility self-driving software.
The automotive and program retailer will retrofit a low-speed self-driving “micro transit” electric vehicles from a framework up. Magna will provide:
- Body modifications, such as tradition doors and a breathtaking moonroof;
- Drive-by-wire upfitting to modify a vehicles into an autonomous-ready state;
- Sensor integration, including mounting, cabling, and streamlined cowlings.
Magna will work on a vehicles during a tradition build core in suburban Detroit. May Mobility engineers will combine on a growth from a company’s Ann Arbor, Mich., headquarters.
The shuttles will be deployed primarily this summer in a blurb ride-sharing use in downtown Detroit. Eventually, a companies wish thousands of a vehicles deployed in several markets.
May Mobility intends to offer on-demand services by 2019 and enhance a apartment of vehicles and services formed on patron demand.
Investors in May Mobility embody Toyota Motor Corp. and BMW AG.
